Mersea Mick, One man and his dog went to war … the heartwarming tale of a First World War fighter pilot and his faithful fox terrier Mick is the basis of a multi-media project to help teach schoolchildren about the First World War as the conflict’s centenary approaches.

In November 2013, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Mersea Island Tales Educational Trust ran 3 pilot-project days in the barn at Ivy Farm, home of Mick and the Roberts brothers. Over 100 pupils from three local schools, one primary, one secondary and one Community Special School helped us trial activities designed to bring WWI into the classroom in an engaging way.

The lesson plans on the right will give you a flavour of the types of activities that we can now offer at Ivy Farm. You can download and use these in your classroom. Alternatively please use the contact form or call to discuss either a day at Ivy Farm, or for the author Veronique to visit your school.

Ivy Farm is an approved centre for providing DEFRA funded Educational Access visits, with on-site parking, disabled access toilets etc.  All staff are qualified, CEVAS accredited for delivering educational farm visits, DBS checked and fully first aid trained.  They share many years experience teaching all age-groups from Secondary to Primary.

These materials and activities have been developed by Mersea Island Tales Educational Trust with the help of:

Jane Barnes BA PGCE, Trustee & Primary School Teacher

Jenny Spence MA (Hons) History, former Head of History at Colchester County High School

Ralph Spence, many years farming experience, a degree in art, and CEVAS accredited for delivering educational farm  visits.

During the pilot project we were very grateful to the Great War Aerodrome at Stow Maries for the temporary loan of their WW1 plane and lorry Beryl, Andy Bovingdon from the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association and the Royal Engineer Sappers from 217 Field Squadron for their special contribution to the 3 days.

Ramsden Hall School commented that ‘it was one of their best trips ever!’ Have a look at what we got up to in November 2013 and download our report Pilots, Pets & Planes.
