Last year Mersea Island Tales Education Trust funded ‘HIGH TIDE, LOW TIDE, CLEAN TIDE’, which involved over 420 local school children in an art & environment project highlighting the dangers of marine plastics; an issue that has recently become front-page news.
The Trust engaged local artist Vinny Stapley, to lead a project that ended with the production of a giant ‘SAMMY THE SEAL’ made of plastic gathered by the children from their local beaches.
He now resides in the school seaside garden but will be touring the island again this summer. Watch Out For Him!
We are therefore delighted to announce this year’s project:
CRABTASTIC! (Say “no” to one-use plastic)
Generations of families have enjoyed the timeless pursuit of crabbing on the island. The recent enlargement and improvement to the pontoon reflects its popularity.
CRABTASTIC! aims to raise awareness of the need to prevent plastics entering our beautiful island’s environment and how to crab kindly. It will comprise:
- A school art project and crab installation on the waterfront.
- A kayak instructors course for Mersea School Kayak Club
- & Mersea Sea Scouts.
- Working with Mersea Island Watersports to deliver educational materials to water sports enthusiasts.
Do you know your Shore Crab from your Hairy Crab?
Mrs Jane Barnes; Learning Outside The Classroom Co-ordinator at Mersea Island School said:
‘We always like to take part in inspirational projects, especially when it means getting more young people out on the beach and on local waters, having fun through a host of games and play equipment, learning about the human impact on our unique island whilst doing their bit for the environment at the same time.’
The Trust is encouraged to see some local businesses embracing change and working to reduce their reliance on single use plastics where possible.
It is fantastic to see the long-term commitment of individuals being reinforced by the efforts of the Town Council and other organisations gathering together to try and make Mersea the first litter free island.
Roll on the summer!
